Dr. Larsandrew Dolan Award - 1999
The year was 1948 and soldiers returning from World War II were
adjusting to life Stateside. Henry was no different. He served in the
South Pacific with an artillery unit in the Philippines and, when
discharged, rejoined his two brothers at Flexan Corporation, a
family-owned company. His ties to the Norwegian community centered
around the Normennenes Choral Society. That year, the Society was
performing at the Annual Picnic. Bette, who was
volunteering at the raffle booth, sold a ticket to Henry and he was
smitten. Just a few months later, Henry and Bette were married.
Though a newly married couple they still made time for our organization, Henry served on the Board of Directors for 22 years and was active on the Finance Committee during the 1970s when the Norwood Crossing campus was expanded and upgraded. On May 22, 1977 , the new complex was dedicated. The Normennenes Choral Society opened the program with the United States and Norwegian national anthems. Carolyn Erickson, granddaughter of our founder, Dr. Niles Quales, was among the 600 honored guests.
While Henry was involved in the governance of our organization, Bette continued to volunteer, joining the Women’s Service League and serving as Vice President for three years. She also remained active with special events and needless to say they never missed a picnic!
