Dr. Larsandrew Dolan Award - 1998
Alf grew up in Chicago, where his parents, immigrants from Norway,
had settled. He attended Schurz High School, Crane Junior College and
graduated from Northwestern University School of Dentistry. In 1942, he
married Ruth and they had two daughters Norma and Beverly. A veteran of
World War II and the Korean conflict, Alf served in the naval reserves
until he was released with the rank of Commander.
Every Monday morning, accompanied by his wife Ruth, who served as his chair assistant, they would come to Norwood Crossing to provide free dental care to the residents.
Alf is remembered for his caring compassion. Often dental treatment was preceded by an apology for any discomfort he might cause to his patients. He would say, “You know, I hate to hurt a friend,” and all his patients were treated like his friends.
In 1978 he was elected to the Board of Directors and in 1998 he was appointed Board Member Emeritus. Always a booster of Norwegian pride, each year, he would ride with residents of Norwood Crossing in the annual Syttende Mai Parade in Park Ridge. Today, his daughters, Norma and Beverly, continue his legacy to our organization.
